TRICHOLOGY -WHAT IS IT?

Trichology is the science and study of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair and scalp.

An IoT registered trichologist – although not a doctor, will have had extensive specialised training and have an expert knowledge of the hair and scalp and all matters associated to that area of the body. They will also have excellent knowledge of many other areas of the body which may relate to hair loss, skin or scalp issues.

The hair is a barometer of our general health and the body with its various systems needs to function like a well-rehearsed orchestra. Every component must play its role in a balanced and effective way at exactly the right time or else noise or chaos ensues. Often when a part of our body is out of balance it will tell in the condition of our hair and skin.

Preliminary diagnosis is given, and we then can discus treatment and or management of your condition, customised treatments with specialised trichological products. We may need to liaise with, or refer to other health professionals i.e. GP, dermatologists to determine to best course of action, bearing in mind improvement can be slow as there are rarely any quick fixes or miracle cures to hair loss problems.

Having spent nearly 30 years in the hairdressing industry I have encountered many people with hair and scalp problems. The first person people tend to ask for advice is their hairdresser. Frustrated at being unable to answer these questions in depth I decided to train to become a trichologist, so I could truly give the correct advice and information to people who needed it.
